This reminds me of a lot of art that was produced in the '70s. It has a very Andy Warhol feel. But it also reminds me of '70s fashion photography where it was common to use a lot of graphic patterns in the background or foreground.
Lighting wasn't very sophisticated back then and photographers often turned to using physical devices to mediate the light or composition.
But you couldn't do it like you can today because when you shot film you had to be so careful and make sure you got something that was useful. Even with Polaroid tests, photographers had to be super careful.
