Wednesday night storm.

While taking the trash out this evening I saw there was a thunder storm coming toward Ave. B and 16th street where I live. So after dumping the trash I got my camera and tripod and started taking photos and waiting. This was one of only two which caught any lightning bolts. Trying to take photos of lightning is a lot like fishing I think, except if I were fishing I wouldn’t have even caught one.

Very strong lightning photo! Photographing lightning is indeed like fishing. You often come back empty handed.

The really hard part about lightning photography is trying to get foreground scenery or other compositional elements to combine in the photo.

There is a stunning image from a National Geographic Society video that I will show in class later. It's an image that shows this remarkable bolt of lightning stretching from sky to ground AND it illuminates a water spout that is nearby.

It's probably one of the most dramatic images I've ever seen. The timing of the photorapher, plus the technical challenge combined with his/her proximity to the event is extraordinary.
