Place Setting

I took these at a reception on base last night. I thought they looked good as a set. Photos by Robert Neno

Flaming Car with Matching Man

This photo made me laugh, I was getting the reflection of the flaming 1st car reflected in the second flaming car beside it, and noticed a matching man behind them.

The Rockin' Aces

During a vintage car show in Hemet California, Ed Reeves of The Rockin' Aces plays guitar and sings to the crowd on Saturday afternoon. The Rockin' Aces specialize in Rockabilly, Swing and Blues music.

Shutter drag

OK. Here's one example of this shutter drag technique I was talking about in class. This one was shot just after sundown using a 28 mm focal length with an aperture of f/4 at 1/10th of a second shutter speed using the TTL flash built into the camera.

This one worked out fairly well because there's not too much blur in the subject's face, but the edges of her hair and body along with the background get a nice little hint of movement.

One of the tricks to really making this work is to have most of the ambient illumination behind the subjet and have very little available light on your primary subject. In this situation, there was very daylight on Cynthia's face, but the wall sconces on the party house back there provided enough light for the blur to happen. You can see some blue sky in the background, but because we were standing in a slightly shaded area, there was not too much light where we were standing.

One of the tricks to this technique is to find the correct exposure for the available light for a slow shutter speed--something like 1/15th or 1/8th and then underexpose about one stop add then add the flash.

You rarely get the same results every time with this technique. There are so many variables to consider that it's just hard to predict the results, but with a little experience and some practice, you can get some fun pictures every now and then...plus a whole bunch of mistakes too.

Casual Seating

I enjoy dark photos, I probably should have used a back light aimed at the back drop to get her more defined from the black.
I did like the shape and texture of the wicker chair, also I should not have cut off her foot...next time...

Lighting Ceremony

On Tuesday, Oct. 2 there will be a lighting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Lane Building Mural in old downtown. This is scheduled for 7:30 and should provide a pretty fun photo opportunity. This is in the area of 3rd Street and Maiden Lane.

There will be munchies...very good munchies...and I've alerted the Art Center that we're coming and they've alloted us six spots (to account for how much food to order for the event). So please let me know who wants to attend. I will take the first six who respond.

Candy Buzz

This was one of my late night adventures. I came up with this idea while eating some nerds and saw my wife’s mirror lying around. I thought it was fairly clever. Watch out for those nerds they are bad news. Photo by Robert Neno.

Ben

This is a portrait of my friend Ben that I took. I took this photo while I and two other students were practicing using some studio lights. I thought we had minimal success. Photo by Robert Neno.

Photo size

OK. I take it back. Maybe you should size the pictures a little smaller. Try 6-inch widths for the longest dimension at 150 ppi.

"Summer Harvest"
The dog is not driving

Maybe my first picture. This is called "Round-up" taken on a ranch in Northwest Washington state. We were ready for branding and the making of Bulls into steers.

My daughter with neighbor

Yep, that's my daughter, Allie, on the left making the funny face. She's playing with our neighbor, Brittany. They've taken a bunch of fabric I use for my studio work and strung it from the basketball goal to my wife's car. I thought this was pretty fun stuff.

JPG Magazine

I forgot to mention in class that I noticed Jackie was carrying a copy of JPG Magazine.

This is a really fine publication dedicated to a raw style of photography. A lot of it contains photojournalism-style images with attitude. I forget where I got it in town--either Hastings or Barnes and Noble. But you can also go to their Web site.

What's cool about the site (www.jpgmag.com) is that you can upload photos and get peer reviews and possibly earn cash.

If that's your interest, go to the "About" link and then click the "How it Works" link.

Otherwise, if you're just looking for inspiration, tumble around the site. There is a lot to see.

Trying again

Mmmkay. Check that. It seems to be working now.

Posting problems

Has anyone tried posting up photos lately? I've tried two or three times since last night and have not been able to get a photo to upload.

Mardi Martini

Thanks for the advice, I do like to study other work and try to mimick it, but usually with a different twist to it...I don't quite understand layering, yet, but will look into it...I'm beginning to think, you are either born with a talent or not...I have been at this for about 2 years, I see progression, but not to the extent I would like.

At the County Fair.

It was interesting to try and walk around the fair with a tripod on the first night. I like this one because of the repetition of the circles. Photo by Robert Neno.

Bird (For Real)

Here is a composite that I created with the help of the folks at Adobe. I had taken many of this bird feeding form this thing. Later (a year or so) I discovered that I could make things like this. Photo By Robert Neno.

OK. Since we're on a "flipping the bird" theme, I might as well add my own.

Blood from Diamond

I'm sure this has been done to...??

Nothing New Under The Sun..

I have tried so hard to find something original to do with my images and each time I think I have something someone tells me it has been done..the couch, which I did a series on because my son would not unload it from his truck for 2 weeks, just went around town with an ugly old couch in the back...so I thought I'd make a series......already been done...then I did the grid and zebra print, thought it was new , nope done in the 60's and 70's...sooo here is a picture of a daisy sitting in the mist produced by dry ice, and another in dry ice with water added in front...I'm sure 'it's been done' Is it POSSIBLE to come up with something new???
I'm about to give up...

Bird

I got a new lens and have been playing around with the depth of field. My wife didn’t appreciate it too much. Once I got it on the computer I thought it was kind of interesting, plus I haven’t put anything on here in a bit. Photo by Robert Neno.

These are a few closer shots I had.

Old Glory
A view from the flags looking toward the Hospital.
This was taken on 9/11 atop the hill across from the Hospital. The Cub Scouts put up flags last year and I thought they would have them again this year and they did. Each flag is attached with an individual message. Some were in honor of specific people they lost or knew, but others were general messages like this one. In case it's hard to read it, it simply says, "In honor of everyone's help!" It may not be the best picture, but it just made me stop for a second and remember.
Sara Malinowski

I like this one because it shows how the monks are so into their creation of the Mandala. Anyone who was standing and observing them noticed how they were able to concentrate and meditate on their work regardless of us noisy students milling about them. They were a great inspiration to see.
First post so be gentle. This picture is of the colored sands the Tibetan Monks used in their Mandala, just thought it came out really nice because of all the brilliant colors and detail. --Sara Malinowski

Unusual Composition

I thought this made an interesting image, what do you think?

Clouds

Here are some clouds I spotted on the way back from Mesa this weekend. These were part of a system that was rolling through the area around Maricopa.

Big Red Fender

Here is a car from a car show that I used Photoshop on, was fun, the sky was so blownout from noon sunshine that I decided to add the clouds and make the car really show up, I liked the angle of the picture, but hated the bright white sky, so I added the clouds?

I have heard that not to long ago, people actually descendded from this. If you look carefully you can see where they would attach to this faux Swiss mountain.

Drill Team Revisited

Carlos, I read you comment and thought I would start another conversation with this. I removed the offending pole. I was wondering what your thoughts on that would be. Is this something you view as unacceptable?? Is it situation specific?? I would think it would only mater depending on what the photo is going to be used for. Then again it is just a pole. I didn’t remove anything that would be important or relevant to the photo. I’m not intentionally misleading anyone or trying to manipulate them by doing this. Just wondering what you think about it. Maybe this will begin a good discussion. Who knows? Photo by Robert Neno.
