Carlos plays with Kristi's soccer photo

This is an example of the "hand of God" burning and dodging technique I was talking about earlier. I took Kristi's soccer image and used the burning and dodging tool, along with an overlay, 50 percent gray layer to darken and lighten specific areas of the image to make the primary subject stand out.

Again, this is an old technique from the days of black and white newspaper photography. It was popular, particularly in the '80s as a way to add drama to the images. It got to be a little overdone and turned from a subtle touchup to an overt act of distortion and manipulation for a lot of photographers.
